Medallion or devotional pendant or reliquary made of aventurine or aventurine with an octagonal shape and faceted fronts, enhanced with a series of enamels combining black and gold, which protect two oil paintings with a Catholic Christian religious theme, located one on each side of the piece. Protected, you can see a very particular Virgin with Child for being inspired by the Icon of the Madonna del Popolo (Rome, Italy), and a simplified Martyrdom of San Lorenzo (the saint, the grill and an angel with a crown and the palm corresponding to the subject). The edges of the piece have been protected with simple metal elements.
The painting of San Lorenzo follows a common composition in the Spanish school, and would recall works such as the painting of the main altar of the Church of San Lorenzo de Huesca, for example, but also others such as the engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (executed around 1527) in some details. The so-called icon of the Madonna del Popolo was well known for being considered as made by Saint Luke, and was brought to the church of the same denomination by Gregory IX from the Sancta Sanctorum of the Lateran Palace after a flood caused a terrible plague in the city and through a solemn procession with the image of Santa Maria del Popolo.
Regarding the material of the piece, a certain type of glass and a type of quartz (which can be green or reddish-brown, and usually has tiny elements of yellow mica that give it golden reflections) is known as aventurine or aventurine. In the first case, it is known that “aventurine” or “stellaria” appears mentioned in the Murano workshops for the first time during the first quarter of the 17th century, in reference to a very complicated production paste (it is said that the name comes from of this circumstance, that is, that its creation was due to luck or luck) that imitates the effects of that stone (from India and Russia at that time) thanks to the inclusion of copper particles, and that it was used as if out of stone (cut) given the complexity of its use in blowing (practically impossible). This rare and remarkable piece begins with a backdrop composed of beautifully, handwritten love letters from the 1800s. There are three scrolls made up of additional love letters, sealed with red wax from the 19th century scattered around two antique books. The open book on the left, was written during the time of the 30 Year War, 1618-1648 in France, when the Treaty of Westphalia changed the map of Europe. During this period, the church attempted to begin marriage registrations and within this written relic, there are numerous marriage entries with names and dates. The book is bound by animal hide from the 12th-13th century and when it is unfolded, it becomes a giant piece of parchment filled with faded ink handwriting in mysterious Old French. The closed book on the right is from Louis XIII - XVI era and is bound in antique animal hide parchment from the 12th-13th century. When the animal hide is unfurled, the inside is adorned in faded handwritten ink in peculiar Old French. Inside the journal is elegante handwriting in ink but it is difficult to identify the cryptic content. This journal was possibly written by an unknown noble figure or bishop. "The Brooklyn Watch Case Company was established in 1869 and incorporated in 1873 in Brooklyn, New York. The early company manufactured gold and silver cases. However, the silver case line was dropped in favor of their popular gold line. Eventually, the company introduced gold-filled cases as well. In 1888, the copmany introduced its "Granger" product line, a double-stock solid gold case featuring a layer of 14K on the outside and a lower karat solid gold on the inside. This innovative line of cases, available in 18, 16, 6, and 0 sizes, found immediate success in the market. In 1890, the company introduced a case with a patented dust band design. These "dust-proof" cases are uncommon and usually demand a premium in the collector market. In 1893, the company discontinued its "Wheat" case. The same year, Lewis A. Parsons, president of the company, died from a stroke. His son, Frederick E. Parsons, who served as the company's treasurer, died in August 1893 from malaria. The deaths of this father/son duo caused disruption in the momentum of the company. In 1894, the Brooklyn Watch Case Company was absorbed by the Fahys Watch Case Company. Fahys consolidated the offices and relocated the existing stock of the company. However, the company continued to manufacture and sell cases using the popular Brooklyn Watch Case Company name. George E. Fahys, son of Joseph, became president of the Brooklyn Watch Case Company. In 1896, production was also consolidated to the Fahys factory in Sag Harbor, Long Island. A separate entity, Joseph Fahys & Co. became the general sales agent for both companies. Brooklyn appears to have been fully absorbed by Fahys by 1919.
